The HEAD Microgel range of squash rackets are still widely used among club and county players. Although they have now been updated with the new range which integrated the Corrugated Technology, this range have succeeded in what they set out to achieve. Lots of power which we have come to expect from head rackets and also added control as the Microgel properties gives the rackets a rock solid feel on the ball’s impact.

The Microgel is a silicone based material which has been combined with stiff and strong carbon composite fibres which deforms and compresses on the ball’s impact. It absorbs and disperses the impact to the whole frame and then quickly reshapes again. The end result is a very responsive racket to suit the fast paced game of today.

Six rackets make up the HEAD Microgel range which are the – Instinct, Extreme, Fire, 125, 135, 145.

The Microgel 125, 135, 145 and Fire are pretty much the same rackets with just different weights although the balance in the 125 is slightly higher due to it being lighter. The string patterns are all the same leaving the long main strings free without a bridge in the throat for optimum power. They also have the same larger racket head area than the other rackets which gives a bigger sweet spot for better control.

As all the rackets were quite similar I was surprised at how much difference the weight of the rackets affected my shots. The 125 was extremely nimble and easy to maneuver from forehand to backhand but it was just a little bit too light for me. It is a nice racket but I felt on occasions I lost my shape and my footwork gets a little lazy as I start to flick the ball around the court. On the other hand the Fire was too heavy for me, once again It played well and felt solid but found I was just a little to slow at times in keeping my racket prepared for the next shot. I was most suited to the 135 and 145, just about right for shot taking and preparing quickly. The rackets in general were pleasant to use, plenty of power created from the open throat area and bags of control. HEAD rackets certainly have a unique feel and playability about them which has improved in this range. The power is still very much there but they seem more controlled and would probably appeal to more players of all standards.

The last two rackets in the range are the Microgel Instinct and the Extreme. These rackets are once again quite similar to each other apart from the weight and balance. These both have a smaller head size with a bridge in the throat area and a slightly denser string pattern.

I opted just to test the Extreme as I knew the Instinct would be a little too heavy for me @155 g. The Extreme turned out to be my favourite out of the whole range. I have always preferred rackets with the bridge in the throat area as I feel this is vital for stability and control although you may lose some power. I felt much more at ease with the Extreme and could concentrate on my game rather than the racket itself. It still has great power but I really liked the the feel of it and to me it is the best all rounder. Nice weight and balance and actually felt a lot different from the first four rackets in this range, more comfortable and stable.

I enjoyed all the rackets and I feel HEAD rackets have come along way with the Microgel range. It definitely still caters for the hard hitters in the game but they are more versatile and controlled than before. With squash getting more faster and aggressive I can see why many top flight players are choosing HEAD to keep up with the pace.

TAKING TECHNOLOGY TO A NEW DIMENSION

Dunlop are the leading brand in squash rackets and the choice of the majority of top flight players on the world circuit including Lee Beachill, Jonathan Power and Amr Shabana . All three players have been world number one while using Dunlop rackets. Nick Matthew has also just recently moved to Dunlop and has launched his signature racket the ‘Evolution’ which I have tested and reviewed.

The new range is available from July 2009 which has the new 4D technology incorporated in each racket. The new 4D Braided technology enhances the and compliments the Aerogel system already in place which makes this a revolutionary combination. The rackets are constructed with four directional braiding of super light S-glass fibres which gives you four times the benefit of a standard carbon racket. Only one layer of braided 4D equals four layers of carbon, so the racket is also softer and less stiff for comfort and control. This new technology also helps to minimize torsional twist and gain more control by adding the 4D Braiding at key areas on the frame which are – 5 and 7 o’clock and then again at 3 and 9 o’clock for increased stability, touch and feel.

This breakthrough technology along with Aerogel which incorporates the worlds lightest solid that has a strength of 4,000 times its own weight can deliver an unmatched strength to weight ratio for advanced stiffness and power. All these extra benifits do not increase the weight of the racket and the ‘M-Fil’ system across the hitting zone to soften the ball’s impact means the new frames can deliver the perfect balance between power and control.

The Dunlop Aerogel Ultimate is designed for the intermediate to advanced players, especially balanced with a head light frame profile and a dense 16 x 19 string pattern. It has been designed with an expanded throat and oversized head for optimal power and also an extended handle for extra comfort and superb control. This is the preferred choice of the two times world number one Amr Shabana who uses this racket to its full potential.

I have used this racket for a test match and was very impressed with its performance. Although I already use Dunlop rackets as my preferred choice I could definitely notice the difference in a few areas. The racket is more powerful without a doubt but does not compromise the control and feel when hitting the ball at pace. The racket is a good medium weight and did not actually feel it was head light and kept shape for a true swing and follow through. I enjoyed my experience with the ‘Ultimate’ and would strongly recommend any Dunlop user to upgrade and feel the difference.

The Dunlop Aerogel4D max is once again designed for an intermediate to advanced player who seeks pure power. The racket has the tear drop head shape with the long main strings to provide the player with the explosive power when called for but the 4D Braided areas ensures the stability and control.

On my trial game with this racket I was shocked at how much power the tear drop head shape actually provided with the slightest of effort. Still a good weight but took a lot longer to get used to the pure power and trying not to over hit my shots. With this racket you are sure to get good length however you will have to practice to find your touch as it is so tempting to blast your opponent off the court.

The Dunlop Aerogel 4D Evolution racket is the lightest racket in this range with a raw frame weight of 120g it is the lightest racket Dunlop have ever produced. The frame itself is handcrafted with a tear drop head design for explosive power but still maintains string bed control through a small bridge located in the throat area. The characteristics of the ‘Evolution’ allow players of all standards to experience lightweight power, great manoeuvrability with a decent amount of control.

This particular racket is endorsed by Nick Matthew who ranks 9th in the PSA men’s world ranking. Earlier this year Nick Matthew was crowned British National Champion by winning the British Open overcoming fierce opposition and storming the final in straight sets. This is the racket in the new 4D range I was most looking forward to testing as I liked the design and shape. I can safely say I was not disappointed, it felt great to use. The tear drop shaped head with the bridge gave extra controlled power and being so light taking your shot felt effortless. Everything about this racket is right, weight, feel, power and control. It seems Dunlop have once again produced another highly playable racket that almost feels like an extension of your arm.

The Dunlop aerogel Pro has been updated with the new 4D braiding technology. The popular racket once again has the pro player specifications with the even frame weight for increased control and feel. It also enhances the momentum during swing cycle to create more power.

This is a great all round racket for any standard of player, just because it is designed for the pro player does not mean it will not suit a player of a lesser standard. The weight is evenly distributed which makes the racket very true to swing, although not the lightest of rackets it still offered good solid power and excellent control. This racket offers no real thrills or gimmicks but stays at it always has been as a true players racket and I’m sure this will keep the pro racket frame legacy alive. A great racket to use at a really reasonable price, very much the all round favourite.

The Tecnifibre Suprem series offers a choice of four top quality rackets. The Suprem NG 130, Pulse 130, Axis 150 and the Fire 160 which all use the Elllipsis Shaft technology to provide the player with superior control. The Suprem NG 130 is the preferred choice of up and coming English player Alister Walker who is starting to make an impression on the world circuit with some great wins under his belt and looks to be improving still. He says ” Tecnifibre took care to develop a racket for my game. Light, stiff and powerful. The smaller head size increases control and the string is still the best you can get.” The Elllipsis Shaft technology provides 40% more stability than a standard square beam and a whopping 80% more rigidity compared to the square beam. The Suprem NG 130 certainly had a lot of technology behind its design but I wondered if it would really make a substantial difference to the performance.

On trial I realised very quickly the racket suited my game down to the ground and I could easily swap over to the Suprem NG 130 without any real adjustments. The balance was great, the feel was great and I was able to put good pace on the ball but still be very accurate. Weather I played a drop shot or attacking drive I could control the pace and accuracy as it actually felt very comfortable and natural to swing. The Elllipsis Shaft and Stabyl Tri-Carbon technology make an excellent combination providing power and control, it surprised me at how easy the racket is to use as normally it takes me a few games to used to.

I summary the Suprem NG 130 is my favoured racket out of the new tecnifibre 2009/10 range, not only does it have enough power and control but also comes standard with the 305 premium green string so no need for a re-string to start with.

Tecnifibre Suprem NG 130 Squash Racket

The tecnifibre dynergy series consists of just two rackets, the dynergy tour 125 and the dynegy max 145 both of which are top range. The 125 tour is the preferred choice of Egyptian top flight player Wael el Hindi who has been using this racket for some time even though it is new for April 2009. His comments on the racket include “this racket gives me the benefit of increased power to my shots. I love the new x-one strings which are also more powerful”.

Unlike the carbonflex series these rackets emphasise on strength and power buy using the ‘Black Weave’ and ‘Jumbo shaft technology’ which provides the player with exlosive power. By providing 50% more resistance to flexing than the carbonflex the dynery tour can produce the power a player needs to take the game to the next level.

On trial this racket certainly exceeded the expectations on the amount of extra power it generates. Getting a good length was absolutely effortless even on a relatively cold court with a double dot ball! Although the Dynergy Tour is probably a much lighter racket than I normally would use the weight is nicely distributed for a better balance to help you keep your shape whilst taking a stroke. The racket does boast excellent power but I found it hard to find good touch especially judging the weight of a drop shot or taking the pace off an attacking drive. This might just mean adjusting and getting used to the pace and feel of the racket but after my test drive I knew this racket was not for me. I found because of the extra power I was over hitting my my shots especially my lengths which were bouncing of the back wall like I was playing with bouncy ball. Drop shots were hard to keep tight because of the pace and when I adjusted the pace I seemed to hit the tin far too much as I found it hard to judge. I’m sure this racket will suit some players, especially the players who like to grind out a result by keeping the ball tight and the rallies long. I, however felt the power was too relentless for my style as I could not find a happy medium to play my range of shots and the different paces I needed to be effective and much preferred the Carbonflex model.

The Dynergy Tour seems to be a little dearer than The Carbonflex at about £9o but you do get a free racket bag with some deals.

Tecnifibre Dynergy Tour 125 Squash Racket

As from april 2009 Tecnifibre are launching there new ranges of squash rackets for the 2009/10 season. They are certainly making an impression on the world squash circuit as many of the top players have been using the new models with great success. The new range of rackets looks fresh and exciting combining new compositions for the frame with the well known top quality premium string. There are three main categories for the rackets and I have chosen one from each which are all endorsed by top flight players to overview along with the specifications.

The first category is the ‘carboflex’ series which consists of the 130,140,speed and junior. The 140 however is the choice of Thierry Lincou a well established top player on the world squash circuit who says “Carboflex gives me power and feel to my game and as taken me to the world open and world number one”. The carboflex boasts to incorporate the isomorph shaft technology with basaltex transmitters (a mineral fibre extracted from lava stone) to give the player power when needed but also excellent touch. Extra response is gained by the shaft’s flex benefits so it is appropriately suited to the player of today.

I have had the opportunity to put this racket to the test and I must say I was quite surprised at how good it felt. It did lack some power but I was impressed with the control and touch. The carboflex obviously does cushion some of the pace on the ball but without any vibration unlike some rackets I have tried. The control is also down to the better quality string which is put in as standard and lasts a lot longer than ordinary cheaper string.

Overall the carboflex 140 is a nice example of a good balanced racket for the alround player. I enjoyed playing with it as it is effortless to swing and feels great when you hit the ball crisply. If you seek lots of power then this racket is not right for you and should look more at the other rackets in the series I have also reviewed.

I feel tecnifibre have come along way with their racket designs and I also feel their new range will be a great success as more players chose tecnifibre over other well known brands. Not only are they competing with all the other top brands with there cutting edge technology but the carboflex line are also reasonably priced which makes them attractive to beginners as well as professionals. Prices vary from shop to shop but expect to pay in the region of £65 to £85 which is a good deal and will fit into many peoples budget, but also look for bogof deals which will prove even cheaper.
